Questions Hajj, umrah and qurbani

Can you do more than one umrah in one trip?

Short answer

Yes, in the Hanafi school. You may repeat umrah as often as you like, including several in one stay, by going out of the Haram to a point such as Tan'im for each new ihram, except on 9 to 13 Dhul Hijjah. The Maliki school dislikes more than one umrah a year, and some scholars prefer extra tawaf instead.

Hanafi position

Repeating umrah is allowed and rewarded, any number of times, with no dislike except on the five days of Hajj. Each umrah needs its own ihram from the hill area (outside the Haram) and ends with its own shave or trim.

Other madhhabs
Maliki
It is makruh to perform more than one umrah in the same year.
Hanbali
Repeating is allowed, but some Hanbali scholars dislike doing many in a short time and prefer extra tawaf for those staying in Makkah.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ said one umrah to the next is an expiation for what is between them. After the Farewell Hajj he sent A'ishah with her brother to Tan'im so she could do another umrah. Hanafi jurists see no limit, as umrah is a voluntary act of worship like prayer.

  • How: after finishing your first umrah and shaving or trimming, go out to Tan'im (Masjid Aisha) or Ji'ranah, enter ihram, return and do tawaf and sa'i, then shave or trim again. See umrah from Makkah.
  • Hair: each umrah must end with halq or taqsir. If your head is already shaved, pass a razor over it.
  • For others: extra umrahs can be for a parent or someone who has died (see umrah on behalf).
  • Not on: 9 to 13 Dhul Hijjah (see umrah during Hajj days).

Some scholars note that the Companions who stayed in Makkah did not keep going to Tan'im, and they prefer that someone in Makkah spend the time in tawaf, which is available without leaving the mosque. Both are good. Choose what you can do with presence of heart, without exhausting yourself or crowding others.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:158

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.

Voluntary acts of worship are rewarded.
