Questions Hajj, umrah and qurbani

Can you sleep in ihram?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes, you can sleep in ihram as long as you like. Men must not cover the head or face, even with a blanket while asleep; covering the rest of the body with a blanket or sheet is fine. Women may cover the head but not the face. A wet dream does not affect ihram; just take a ghusl.

Hanafi position

Sleep is permitted in ihram. A man covering his head or face for a full day or night, even while asleep or by mistake, owes a dam; for less, sadaqah. A woman may not cover her face with something touching it. A wet dream brings no penalty.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i and Hanbali
A man may cover his face; only the head is forbidden. A violation made while asleep or by genuine forgetfulness carries no penalty for things like covering the head or wearing clothes, as long as he removes it on waking.

Explanation

When a pilgrim died in ihram, the Prophet ﷺ told the companions not to cover his head or his face, because he would be raised on the Day of Judgement saying the talbiyah. The Hanafis take this as the rule for a living man in ihram as well.

  • Blanket or sheet: pull it over your body and feet, not over your head or face.
  • Pillow: resting your head on a pillow is not covering it.
  • Cold or air-conditioning: wrap your body well and leave the head and face out. In the Hanafi school, covering a quarter or more of the head or face for a full day or night needs a dam; less than a quarter, or a shorter time, needs sadaqah. An eye mask covers less than a quarter of the face, so it brings sadaqah; it is better to avoid it.
  • Turned over in sleep: if the blanket slid over your head for a short time, give a small sadaqah in the Hanafi school. Hanafi jurists apply the penalty whether it happened deliberately, in sleep or by mistake, but there is no sin when it was not on purpose.
  • Wet dream: no penalty and no effect on ihram. Take a ghusl; do not use scented soap.
  • Women: may sleep with the head covered. Keep blankets off the face.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:196

And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

A need that breaks an ihram rule is allowed with a ransom.
