Short answer
No. What counts is the intention of the person whose qurbani it is, made when appointing the share or the slaughterer. Saying names aloud is not required, though it is sunnah to ask Allah to accept it from them. The slaughterer must say "Bismillah, Allahu akbar".
The owner's intention that the animal or share is his qurbani is required; naming the owners aloud at slaughter is not a condition. When a charity or relative slaughters for you, your intention when you appointed them is enough. The tasmiyah (saying Allah's name) by the slaughterer is a condition.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
When the Prophet ﷺ sacrificed his ram, he said: "In the name of Allah. O Allah, accept from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad and the ummah of Muhammad." This shows mentioning those it is for is a good sunnah. But the four schools agree it is not a condition: the intention of the owner is what makes it a qurbani.
- Your own animal: intend it as your qurbani. At slaughter you may say "O Allah, accept it from me" or from your family.
- A share in a cow or camel: each partner must intend qurbani (or aqiqah). Names are written so the charity knows who joined, but if a name is misspelt the share still counts.
- Paying a charity: give the name of each person it is for. Your intention when paying covers it.
- Full name or father's name: not required. Just make sure the charity knows which person it is for.
- On behalf of someone else: a living adult who owes qurbani should give permission (see per person or per household). For the deceased, see qurbani for the dead.
What the slaughterer says is covered in dua for qurbani.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-An'aam 6:162
قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِى وَنُسُكِى وَمَحْيَاىَ وَمَمَاتِى لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿١٦٢﴾
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.
The sacrifice is defined by the intention for Allah.
Sahih Muslim 1967
Sahih... باسم الله اللهم تقبل من محمد وآل محمد ومن أمة محمد ...
"In the name of Allah. O Allah, accept from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad and the ummah of Muhammad."
Mentioning those it is for is a sunnah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
Sahih... إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى ...
"Actions are only by intentions, and each person will have what he intended."
The owner's intention makes it a qurbani.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Udhiyah. The intention of each partner is needed; a share fails if one partner intends only meat.
- Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Udhiyah, on appointing another to slaughter. The owner's intention at appointment suffices; naming at slaughter is not required.
