Questions Quran, dua and dhikr

Does the Quran say the earth is flat?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No. The Quran describes the earth as spread out for people to live on, which is how it looks and feels to someone standing on it, not a claim about its overall shape. Classical Muslim scholars such as Ibn Hazm and Ibn Taymiyya stated that the earth is round, and some pointed to the Quran's description of night wrapping around day.

Hanafi position

This is not a fiqh question. Believing the earth is round, or not having a view on it, does not affect anyone's faith, and the scholars did not treat the shape of the earth as a matter of creed.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The ayat people quote say that Allah spread the earth: "And after that He spread the earth" (79:30), "and at the earth, how it is spread out" (88:20), and "We have spread it" (15:19). The words describe the earth as a wide, level place, prepared for walking, farming and building. A sphere as large as the earth looks and feels flat to anyone standing on it, so these ayat describe our experience of it, not its shape from space.

The Quran also says Allah "wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night" (39:5). The Arabic word yukawwir is used for winding a turban around a head, and several scholars saw in it a hint of a round earth, since night and day chase each other around it.

Muslim scholars who wrote on the subject in the classical period, such as Ibn Hazm of Andalus and later Ibn Taymiyya, stated that the earth and the heavens are round, and Muslim astronomers measured the earth's circumference long before the modern age. So the claim that Islam teaches a flat earth does not come from the Quran or from the mainstream of Muslim scholarship.

The Quran is a book of guidance, not a science textbook, but it asks you to look at creation and reflect (3:191). For more, see miracles of the Quran and the universe in Islam.
