Questions Quran, dua and dhikr

How do you protect your house from shaytan and bad energy?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Recite Surah al-Baqarah in your home, since the Prophet ﷺ said shaytan flees a house where it is recited. Say Bismillah when entering, eating and closing doors at night, read Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, and keep the house clean of images, music and sin. This is the ruqyah of the home; no special ritual is needed.

Hanafi position

Reciting the Quran and the authentic adhkar in the home for protection is mustahabb and is a form of permitted ruqyah. Rituals with no basis, such as burning special objects or hiring someone to 'clean' a house with unknown words, are not allowed.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Islam does not talk about "bad energy" as such, but about shaytan, jinn, the evil eye and the effects of sin. The protection the Sunnah teaches is simple and in your own hands:

  • Surah al-Baqarah: "Do not make your houses graves. Shaytan flees from a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited" (Muslim). Read it over a few days, or play it while the family listens. At least read its last two ayat each night: see the last two ayat of al-Baqarah.
  • Bismillah at the door and the table: when a man mentions Allah on entering and eating, shaytan says to his companions: no place to stay and no dinner for you (Muslim). See dua for entering the home.
  • At night: close doors and cover vessels with Bismillah (Bukhari), and read Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping: whoever does so has a guard from Allah until morning (Bukhari).
  • The three Quls: the Prophet ﷺ blew into his hands after reciting them and wiped over his body each night. See the Quls.
  • Salah at home: pray your sunnah and nafl prayers at home so it is not like a grave.
  • Keep out what keeps angels away: angels do not enter a house with a dog kept without need or pictures of living beings on display (Bukhari). Keep the home free of music and open sin too.

If a family member shows signs of jinn or the evil eye, recite ruqyah yourselves: see is ruqyah allowed. Avoid anyone who asks for strange items, your mother's name or large fees to clear a house. The four schools agree on all of the above.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:255

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Ayat al-Kursi, the ayah of protection before sleep.
