Short answer
Ayat-e-Kareema is the dua of Prophet Yunus in the belly of the whale: "La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min al-zalimin" (21:87). The Prophet ﷺ said no Muslim calls on Allah with it for anything except that Allah answers him. Reading it many times for a need is allowed; the custom of 125,000 readings in a gathering is from experience, not the sunnah.
Reciting Ayat-e-Kareema for a need is mustahabb. Gathering to complete a large count is permitted if it is not believed to be sunnah, no one is pressured, there is no show, no fixed feast or payment is treated as part of it, and women on their period do not recite it with the intention of Quran.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Prophet Yunus, after leaving his people, was swallowed by a great fish. In the darkness he called out: there is no god but You, glory be to You, I have been among the wrongdoers. Allah answered him and saved him, and said: thus do We save the believers (21:87 to 88). The Prophet ﷺ said that no Muslim makes dua with these words for anything except that Allah answers him.
Why it is special. It joins three things: tawhid (no god but You), praise (glory be to You), and admitting one's own fault. This is the heart of repentance and of dua. Many scholars advise reading it in any hardship, debt, illness or fear.
The 125,000 custom. In South Asia, families sometimes gather to complete Ayat-e-Kareema 125,000 times (sawa lakh) for a serious need. There is no hadith fixing this number. The Deobandi scholars say it is permitted as an 'amal from experience, on conditions:
- Do not believe the number is from the sunnah.
- No compulsory feast, payment or fixed date attached to it.
- No showing off or pressure on relatives to attend.
- Women in menses can join by reading it as dua, not as Quran, or by other dhikr.
Reading it yourself, sincerely, a smaller number of times with full attention is just as valid.

The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:87-88
And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.
