Can you wipe over a turban, cap or hijab in wudu?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Not on its own in the Hanafi school. You must wipe at least a quarter of your head directly. You can slip a wet hand under the hijab or turban to wipe the front of the head, then wipe over the cloth to complete the sunnah. The Hanbali school allows wiping over a wrapped turban, and over a hijab wrapped under the chin.

Hanafi position

Wiping over a turban, cap, hijab or scarf alone does not fulfil the fard of wiping the head. At least a quarter of the head itself must be wiped. If a cloth is so thin that the wetness passes through to the hair over a quarter of the head, that suffices.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Wiping over the turban alone is not enough, but you may wipe part of the head and then complete the wipe over the turban.
Maliki
Wiping over a turban or head covering is allowed only when uncovering the head would cause harm.
Hanbali
Wiping over a man's turban that is wound under the chin or has a tail is valid, with conditions like those for khuffs. Many Hanbali scholars allow a woman to wipe over a hijab wrapped under the chin.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ was seen wiping over his turban and his khuffs. Al-Mughirah gave more detail: he wiped over his forelock and then over the turban. The Hanafi school joins the two reports. Because the ayah commands wiping the head itself, the fard is met by the forelock, about a quarter of the head, and wiping over the turban afterwards completes the sunnah. Wiping only over cloth is like wiping over a glove instead of washing the hand.

How to do it with a head covering on:

  • Hijab or scarf: loosen it at the front, slide your wet hand underneath and wipe the front of your head, at least the area of a palm. You do not have to take the whole hijab off or show your hair to others.
  • Turban: push it back a little, wipe the forelock area, then pass your wet hands over the turban.
  • Cap or kufi: lift it, wipe your head, put it back.
  • Ears: wipe them with the same wetness if you can reach them, which is sunnah.

A very thin scarf that lets the water soak straight through to the hair can count, but it is hard to be sure, so wiping directly is safer. At work or in a public washroom, find a corner or a cubicle, or make wudu at home before you leave and keep it.

If you follow the Hanbali school, wiping over a hijab or a wrapped turban is valid within that school's conditions. Hanafis should not copy this view just for convenience. See how much of the head to wipe.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:6

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.

The command is to wipe the head, which the Hanafi school takes as the head itself.
