Short answer
In the Hanafi school intention is a sunnah of wudu, not a condition. Wudu done without intention, for example in a shower, is still valid for prayer, but it earns no reward as worship. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools make intention fard, so wudu without it is invalid for them.
Niyyah in wudu is sunnah mu'akkadah. Water purifies by its nature, so the limbs become pure when washed even without intention. Reward depends on intention. In tayammum, intention is fard because earth does not purify by its nature.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i
- Intention is fard and must be present when you start washing the face.
- Maliki
- Intention is fard.
- Hanbali
- Intention is a condition of wudu; without it the wudu is not valid.
Explanation
Niyyah (intention) means meaning in your heart to purify yourself for prayer or to lift the state of minor impurity. It is not a sentence to say out loud. The Prophet ﷺ said that actions are judged by intentions, and every person gets what they intended.
The schools read this hadith differently for wudu (ablution). The three other schools say wudu is an act of worship, so without intention it does not count. The Hanafi school says the hadith is about the reward of an act. Wudu is also a means to prayer, like covering the awrah or facing the qiblah, and those do not need intention to count. Allah describes water as purifying, so water that runs over the limbs purifies them, whatever you had in mind. Tayammum is different: earth is not a purifier by nature, and the Quran's word for tayammum means to aim for it, so intention is fard there.
Practical cases for a Hanafi:
- You showered and washed all the wudu limbs without thinking of wudu: you have wudu and can pray.
- You washed your face and arms to cool down, then wiped your head and washed your feet: that is valid wudu.
- You made wudu thinking of prayer: valid and rewarded. This is what you should aim for.
- Saying the intention aloud is not required. If it helps your focus, saying it quietly is allowed.
Since every school asks for intention or praises it, make it a habit: before you start, tell yourself you are making wudu for Allah. It takes a second and makes your wudu valid by every view. See does a shower count as wudu and how to make wudu.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Anfaal 8:11
[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.
Describes water as purifying in itself, which the Hanafi school relies on.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
Sahih... انما الاعمال بالنيات ...
"Actions are only by intentions."
The basis for intention in worship; the schools differ on whether it makes wudu valid or only rewarded.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Taharat, sunnahs of wudu. Intention is sunnah in wudu, and fard in tayammum.
- Bada'i al-Sana'i, Kitab al-Taharah, conditions of wudu. Explains why water purifies without intention.
- al-Majmu' (Nawawi), Kitab al-Taharah, chapter on intention in wudu. The Shafi'i view that intention is obligatory.
