Questions Purity

Does najis transfer when it is dry?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No. Dry impurity touching something dry does not make it impure. Impurity passes only through wetness that carries it, and in the Hanafi school only when its colour, smell or wetness actually shows on the other thing. If you are unsure whether it transferred, you stay pure: certainty is not removed by doubt.

Hanafi position

A pure thing becomes impure only when wet impurity, or its trace, reaches it. A dry, clean cloth that touches a wet impure cloth stays pure unless the impurity's trace appears on it or it becomes wet enough to drip when wrung. A doubt about whether impurity transferred is ignored.

If either side is wet, contact makes the pure thing impure, even if no trace of the impurity appears on it.

Explanation

Impurity moves through wetness. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a person unsure whether wind passed should carry on until he hears a sound or notices a smell. From this scholars took the rule that certainty is not removed by doubt, and they apply it to impurity too: things are pure unless you know otherwise.

How it works (Hanafi):

  • Dry on dry: a dry hand on a dry toilet seat, a dry stain or dry dog fur picks nothing up.
  • Wet on dry impurity: a wet foot on a floor where urine dried. If the trace of the impurity comes onto your foot, wash it. If nothing shows, your foot is pure.
  • Dry on wet impurity: a dry towel touching a wet, impure one stays pure unless the impurity's colour or smell shows on it, or it becomes wet enough to drip if squeezed.
  • Sweat on an impure sheet: if your damp body touched a dried stain, it only matters if the stain's trace came onto your skin.

If you do not know whether a surface was impure, such as a public restroom floor, a prayer mat or a shopping cart, treat it as pure. You are not required to investigate, and wiping and washing everything you touch is a road to waswasa.

If you struggle with constant doubts about impurity, ignore them and get help: see waswasa in purity. When something has become impure, see cleaning najis from clothes.

Quran, Surah Al-Hajj 22:78

And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakah and hold fast to Allah. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.

The religion does not demand needless hardship, such as chasing every possible trace of impurity.
