Short answer
In the Hanafi school, ghusl for Jumuah is a sunnah, not wajib. Your Jumuah prayer is valid without it, but you miss a great reward. Do it after Fajr on Friday and pray Jumuah with it. A few early scholars held it wajib, based on a hadith that uses that word.
Ghusl for Jumuah is a sunnah of the prayer, in the relied view of Abu Yusuf, so it is done after dawn on Friday and before the prayer. Ghusl is also sunnah for the two Eids, for ihram and on the day of Arafah. A ghusl for janabah done after Fajr on Friday also covers the Jumuah sunnah if you intend both.
Other madhhabs
- Maliki
- The ghusl must be joined to going to Jumuah; if you bathe and then delay a long time before leaving, repeat it.
- Hanbali
- Sunnah in the relied view; one narration from Imam Ahmad makes it wajib.
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever comes to Jumuah should take a bath, and in another hadith that ghusl on Friday is "wajib for every adult". He also said that whoever makes wudu for Jumuah has done well, and whoever does ghusl has done better. The schools read these together: the bath is strongly urged, but not a condition of the prayer, and "wajib" in that hadith is understood as strongly urged.
Hanafi details:
- Time: after true dawn on Friday. A ghusl on Thursday night does not count.
- Linked to the prayer: in the relied Hanafi view the sunnah belongs to the Jumuah prayer, so a ghusl after the prayer does not earn it. Pray Jumuah with the purity of that ghusl if you can.
- Who: it is sunnah for those who attend Jumuah, though cleanliness is good for everyone.
- One ghusl for two: a ghusl for janabah on Friday morning counts for Jumuah too if you intend both.
Can you pray Jumuah without ghusl? Yes. The prayer is valid with wudu alone, and nobody should miss Jumuah because there was no time to bathe. An ordinary shower counts as the Friday ghusl if you rinse your mouth and nose and wash your whole body.
The same applies to Eid: ghusl is sunnah, not wajib, and the Eid prayer is valid without it. Other sunnahs of Friday include clean clothes, perfume for men, going early and reciting Surah al-Kahf: see the sunnahs of Friday and how to pray Jummah.

Sahih... غسل يوم الجمعة واجب على كل محتلم ...
"Ghusl on Friday is wajib for every adult."
The hadith behind the view that it is obligatory.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 497
Grading to be checked... من توضأ يوم الجمعة فبها ونعمت ومن اغتسل فالغسل أفضل ...
"Whoever makes wudu on Friday, that is good and fine; and whoever does ghusl, ghusl is better."
Shows that wudu is enough for the prayer and ghusl is the better choice.
