What should you do about urine drops after peeing?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Make sure the urine has stopped before you clean and stand up. This is called istibra, and it is necessary in the Hanafi school. Wait, walk a few steps or cough lightly, whatever works for you, without going to extremes. Drops that come out after wudu break it, and drops on clothes must be washed if they add up to more than a dirham.

Hanafi position

Istibra, ensuring the flow of urine has stopped, is wajib for men, by whatever method suits the person: waiting, walking, coughing or lying down. A drop that exits after wudu breaks it. If drops continue through a whole prayer time, the person is ma'dhur. Excess in istibra that feeds waswasa is to be avoided.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Istibra is recommended, not obligatory, unless you expect drops to come out.
Hanbali
Istibra is recommended; pulling or squeezing to excess is disliked.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ passed two graves and said one of the two was punished because he did not guard himself from his urine. Scholars took from this that letting urine drip onto your body or clothes is serious, and that you should finish completely before cleaning.

What istibra looks like in practice:

  • Wait a few moments after the flow stops.
  • Some people need to stand, walk a few steps or cough. Hanafi scholars say each person should do what works for their body.
  • Then clean with paper and water as normal: see istinja.
  • Do not squeeze hard, pull or wait for long minutes. Excess harms the body and feeds waswasa.

If a drop comes out later:

  • After wudu (ablution): your wudu is broken. Wash the spot and make wudu again.
  • On your clothes: drops are washed before prayer if together they cover more than a dirham (about the hollow of the palm), and should be washed if less. See urine on clothes.
  • Only a feeling of wetness with no certainty: ignore it. Sprinkle a little water on your underwear after istinja so that any dampness can be put down to that water. See doubts about wudu.
  • Drops that never stop for a whole prayer time: see praying with urine leakage.

A small piece of tissue in your underwear for a few minutes after urinating can protect your clothes, as long as you check it before prayer. If drops are new or frequent, see a doctor: prostate and bladder problems are common and treatable.
