Questions Women

Can a Muslim woman go to a hair salon?

Short answer

Yes, if the stylist is a woman and the salon is private so that no man sees your hair, as in a women-only or hijab-friendly salon. Having a man cut or style your hair is not allowed. Avoid services that are haram in themselves, such as eyebrow thinning, human-hair extensions and haircuts that copy men.

Hanafi position

Having one's hair cut and styled by a woman in a setting where no non-mahram man can see is permitted. A non-mahram man seeing or touching a woman's hair is haram, so male stylists are not allowed. The usual rules on nams, wasl and imitating men apply to the services chosen.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Grooming and beautifying yourself is allowed and good, especially for your husband. The questions are who sees you and what is done. A woman's hair is awrah in front of non-mahram men, so a male hairdresser cannot cut or style it, and a salon with a glass front where men walk past is not suitable unless there is a private room.

Checklist for a salon visit:

  • Female staff only in the area where you uncover.
  • Private space: no windows onto the street, no male staff or customers walking through. Hijab-friendly salons are made for this.
  • Services that are fine: cuts, trims, colouring (see dyeing your hair), blow-drying, treatments, facial hair removal, manicures (removed before wudu if they block water).
  • Services to avoid: threading or plucking the eyebrows to thin or shape them, human-hair extensions, very short men's cuts, and waxing between the navel and knees by someone else.
  • Photos: do not let the salon post pictures of you without hijab.

Related answers: plucking eyebrows, cutting hair short, extensions and nail polish and prayer.

Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:31

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

A woman's hair is shown only to her husband, mahrams and women.
