Questions Women

Can a woman recite out loud in salah?

Checked by our team

Short answer

In the Hanafi school a woman recites quietly in every prayer, including Fajr, Maghrib and Isha, moving her lips and pronouncing the words but not raising her voice. If she recites aloud, her prayer is still valid, but it goes against the Sunnah for women. The other schools allow her to recite aloud when no non-mahram men can hear.

Hanafi position

A woman does not recite aloud in any prayer; she recites quietly, pronouncing the letters with her tongue. This follows from the caution about a woman's voice in worship. Reciting aloud does not invalidate her prayer on the relied-upon view.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
In the loud prayers she recites aloud if only women or mahrams can hear, but more quietly than a man; with non-mahram men present she lowers her voice.
Hanbali
She may recite aloud in the loud prayers if no non-mahram men can hear.
Maliki
Her loud recitation is only loud enough for herself to hear.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ taught that if something happens in congregation, men say Subhan Allah and women clap. The scholars took from this that a woman's voice is not raised in public worship. The Hanafi school applies the same caution to her own prayer: she recites quietly even in the prayers where men recite aloud, and she does not give the adhan or iqamah.

Quiet does not mean silent in the mind. The Hanafi texts require that the words actually be pronounced with the tongue, with the letters formed; reading only in your head is not recitation and the prayer is not valid without it. The stronger view is that you should be able to hear yourself if it is quiet around you.

Common questions:

  • Praying alone at home: still quiet in the Hanafi school.
  • Leading other women: see women leading women.
  • Takbirs and tasbih: also said quietly.
  • Reciting Quran outside prayer: allowed aloud when only women and mahrams can hear; see is a woman's voice awrah.

The Quran's general rule for prayer is to be neither too loud nor too quiet. For the full method, see how women pray.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Israa 17:110

Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

Recitation in prayer is at a measured level.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Salah, chapter on the description of prayer, reciting aloud and quietly. A woman does not recite aloud; recitation must still be pronounced with the tongue.
  • Nur al-Idah with Maraqi al-Falah, Kitab al-Salah, chapter on reciting aloud and quietly. The minimum of quiet recitation is pronouncing the letters.
