Questions Women

Can a woman wear jewellery that shows with her hijab?

Checked by our team

Short answer

A ring on the hand is fine, since the hands normally show. Jewellery on parts that must be covered, such as earrings, necklaces and anklets, stays hidden from non-mahram men. Jewellery worn on top of the hijab or abaya to catch the eye, like a statement necklace, goes against the purpose of hijab and should be avoided.

Hanafi position

The adornment a woman may show non-mahram men is what normally appears, which the Hanafis explain as the face and hands and what is on them, such as kohl and a ring. Adornment on hidden parts (ears, neck, upper arms, ankles) must not be shown, and ornaments added over the outer clothes to attract attention should be avoided.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Women may wear gold, silver and jewellery: see gold, silver and silk. The question is who sees it. The Quran tells believing women not to show their adornment except what necessarily appears, and to show it only to husbands and close family. It even forbids stamping the feet so that hidden anklets are heard.

Ibn Abbas explained "what appears" as the face and hands, with the kohl and ring on them, and the Hanafi school follows this. So a ring and henna on the hands may be seen. Bracelets sit on the wrist and forearm, so keep them under the sleeve. Earrings, necklaces, armlets and anklets are worn on parts that are awrah, and they are covered along with those parts.

Common cases:

  • Necklace over the hijab or abaya: puts jewellery on display to everyone; avoid it in front of non-mahram men.
  • Earrings showing under a short scarf: the ears are awrah; cover them.
  • A plain pin to hold the scarf: fine. Something functional and modest is not display.
  • Jingling bangles or anklets: avoid when walking among men, following the verse about stamping the feet.
  • Rings and henna on the hands: fine.

At home, with your husband and mahram relatives, and at women-only gatherings, wear what you like. See the conditions of a correct hijab, what piercings are allowed and the hijab guide.

The evidence

Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:31

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

Only what normally appears may be shown to non-mahram men.

Even drawing attention to hidden jewellery by sound is forbidden.
