Questions Women

Can a woman slaughter an animal in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. An animal slaughtered by a Muslim woman is halal, by agreement of the four schools. The conditions are the same as for a man: say Bismillah, use a sharp blade and cut the required vessels of the throat. A woman may also slaughter her own qurbani, and doing it yourself is better than delegating if you can do it well.

Hanafi position

Slaughter by a Muslim or a person of the Book, man or woman, is valid when the conditions are met. It is mustahabb for the owner of a qurbani animal to slaughter it herself if she knows how, or at least to be present.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

A slave girl of the family of Ka'b ibn Malik was grazing sheep when one of them was about to die. She broke a stone, used its sharp edge to slaughter the sheep, and her master asked the Prophet ﷺ about it. He told them to eat it. The scholars took two rulings from this: a woman's slaughter is valid, and so is slaughter with any sharp tool that cuts.

The conditions, for a man or a woman:

  • Muslim (or a Christian or Jew, with details; see meat of the People of the Book).
  • Saying Bismillah at the time of slaughter. See saying Bismillah.
  • A sharp blade, cutting at least three of the four: windpipe, food pipe and the two jugular veins.
  • Kindness to the animal: sharpen the knife out of its sight, lay it down gently and be quick.

Some families believe a woman should not slaughter, or that a woman on her period cannot. Neither has a basis. A menstruating woman's slaughter is valid, since purity is not a condition of slaughter. For Eid al-Adha, a woman who knows how can slaughter her own animal; otherwise she may appoint someone and try to be present. See the qurbani guide and what makes meat halal.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-An'aam 6:118

So eat of that [meat] upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned, if you are believers in His verses.

The condition is the name of Allah, not the gender of the slaughterer.

Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:3

Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Proper slaughter makes the animal lawful.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Dhaba'ih. The slaughter of a Muslim or a person of the Book is lawful, whether man or woman.
  • al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Udhiyah. It is better for the owner to slaughter the sacrifice himself if he does it well.
