Short answer
Not for an ordinary job. Covering is fard, and a job offer or pressure at work is not a necessity that makes uncovering permissible. If there is a real threat to your life or safety, or a legal requirement you truly cannot avoid, the rules of necessity apply, but only as far as needed. Showing your face for ID or security is allowed.
Uncovering the awrah before non-mahram men is not permitted for work, convenience or fear of mockery. Darurah (real necessity), such as a genuine threat to life or limb, permits only what is needed and only while it lasts. Showing the face and hands for identification, a security check or medical need is permitted.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Many sisters face real pressure: interviews where they fear discrimination, workplaces that dislike religious dress, or streets where they have been harassed. The pain is real, and Allah knows it. The ruling still begins with the principle that hijab is fard, and that a worldly benefit does not cancel a fard.
How scholars weigh common cases:
- A job that requires removing hijab: not a valid reason. Look for other work; Allah promises a way out to those who are mindful of Him. Many employers accommodate hijab when asked.
- Uniforms: ask for a matching headscarf or sports hijab, which many hospitals, police forces and airlines already offer.
- ID, passport photos and airport security: showing the face is allowed. Ask for a private check by a woman if hair must be seen.
- Fear of harassment: take sensible steps such as travelling with others and reporting incidents. Fear alone is not darurah.
- A real and present threat to life or safety: necessity permits removing it, or switching to a less visible covering, as far as needed and only while the danger lasts.
The Quran allows what is forbidden for one who is forced, without desire and without going beyond the limit, and tells us to fear Allah as much as we are able. Scholars use these verses to define darurah narrowly: a genuine threat, not discomfort or a lost opportunity. If you are in a hard situation, speak to a mufti with the details, since the answer depends on them.
If you have already taken it off under pressure, you are still a Muslim; see is a woman who does not wear hijab still Muslim. A covering such as a turban with a high neck is better than nothing while you work back towards full hijab: see turban or bandana hijab.
Ask a mufti about your own case. This answer explains the general ruling. When the details of your situation matter, as they do here, ask a qualified mufti and give them the full facts. Where to ask a scholar.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:173
He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Necessity permits the forbidden only within strict limits.
Quran, Surah At-Taghaabun 64:16
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
Obligations are carried out as far as one is able.
Quran, Surah At-Talaaq 65:2
And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for [the acceptance of] Allah. That is instructed to whoever should believe in Allah and the Last day. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out
Allah opens a way for those who hold to His command.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Ashbah wa al-Naza'ir (Ibn Nujaym), The fifth major maxim, harm is removed, and its sub-maxims on necessity. Necessities make the forbidden permissible, and necessity is measured by its extent.
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Karahiyya, chapter on looking and touching. The face and hands may be seen where there is a need such as testimony or treatment.
