Short answer
No. Janazah is a prayer, and prayer needs purity, so a woman on her period does not pray it. She can still be with the family, make dua for the deceased, say istighfar for them and help in other ways. All four schools agree.
Salat al-janazah requires purity like any prayer, so it is not valid during haid or nifas. Washing the body of the deceased is valid if done by a menstruating woman but makruh; it is better left to someone in a state of purity.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ said that no prayer is accepted without purification. The funeral prayer has no ruku or sujud, but it begins with the takbir and ends with the salam like any prayer, so the scholars agree that its conditions include purity, covering the awrah and facing the qiblah.
What you can do while on your period:
- Be with the family at home or at the funeral home and comfort them.
- Make dua for the deceased in your own words and with the sunnah duas; see dua for a dead person.
- Say "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" and istighfar for them.
- Attend the gathering if it is outside the mosque prayer hall; avoid entering the mosque itself. See the mosque on your period.
- Washing the body: allowed but disliked in the Hanafi school; let another woman do it if possible.
You do not need to make up a missed janazah later. If you want to do more for the deceased, give charity on their behalf or make dua regularly. For whether women attend funerals at all, see can women attend a janazah, and for the method, how to pray janazah.
The evidence
Sahih Muslim 224
Sahih... لا تقبل صلاة بغير طهور ولا صدقة من غلول ...
"No prayer is accepted without purification, and no charity from stolen wealth."
Purity is a condition of every prayer, including janazah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 304
Sahih... أليس إذا حاضت لم تصل ولم تصم ...
"Is it not so that when she menstruates she neither prays nor fasts?"
A menstruating woman does not pray.
Where the ruling is recorded
