Short answer
No. In the Hanafi school the colour that counts is the colour when you first see it, not after it dries. Discharge that is white or clear when it comes out is not menstruation, even if it turns yellow on your underwear later. It breaks wudu, but you keep praying. Discharge that is yellow when fresh, within possible period days, is different.
The colour of discharge is judged when it is seen, not after drying. White or clear discharge is never haid; it breaks wudu and, on Imam Abu Hanifa's view, is pure. Yellow, brown or red when first seen, within the period days, is haid.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Normal vaginal discharge often dries to a pale yellow on fabric. Many women worry that this means their period has started or has not finished. The Hanafi jurists dealt with exactly this case: if a woman sees white discharge and it turns yellow after drying, it counts as white; and if she sees red or yellow and it later fades to white, it counts by the colour she first saw.
How to judge:
- Check it fresh: use a white tissue or pad and look at it while wet, in good light.
- White or clear when fresh: not a period, whatever it dries to. Make wudu and pray.
- Yellow, brown or red when fresh, inside the 3 to 10 days: part of the period. See brown discharge.
- Yellow when fresh, outside period days: not a period. It breaks wudu only.
Is it impure? Imam Abu Hanifa held ordinary moisture from inside the vagina to be pure, and many Hanafi muftis follow this for normal discharge, so you do not have to change your underwear before every prayer. Discharge mixed with blood, or from an infection, is impure. See does discharge break wudu.
If your discharge smells strongly, has an unusual colour when fresh, or comes with itching, see a doctor. Do not let colours stop you from praying: go by what it looked like when it came out. If doubts keep coming back, ask a mufti, since this can turn into waswasa (obsessive doubts).
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:222
And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."
Menstruation has its own rulings, which do not apply to ordinary discharge.
Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:286
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."
The rulings are meant to be practical, not a burden of endless doubt.
Muwatta Malik 128
Graded in the Muwatta...
"Aishah told the women: do not be hasty until you see the pure white discharge."
Purity is known by the white colour seen, and colours are judged as they are seen.
Where the ruling is recorded
- Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Taharah, chapter on haid. The colour is judged at the time of seeing, not after drying.
- al-Bahr al-Ra'iq, Kitab al-Taharah, chapter on haid. Gives the example of white turning yellow on drying and the reverse.
