Qibla finder, the direction of the Kaaba from you

Find the qibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, from where you are: a live phone compass, exact degrees from north, the distance and a map. No app needed.

How to read it

The degrees are clockwise from true north. A phone compass points to magnetic north, so use the magnetic bearing with an ordinary compass. The live compass corrects for this automatically.

Your location is used only in your browser to work out the direction. It is never sent or stored.

How it works

Three ways to find the qibla

1Phone

Use the live compass

Press Use my location, then Start the live compass. Hold the phone flat and turn until the arrow points up and turns gold.

2Compass

Use the degrees

Stand with an ordinary compass and face the magnetic bearing shown. It already allows for the difference between magnetic and true north.

3Map

Follow the line

Open the map to see the shortest route to the Kaaba. Line it up with a street or wall you know.

Guide

How the qibla direction is worked out

The qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, which Muslims face in every prayer. Allah says: "So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it."1

The shortest route over the globe

The direction is the start of the shortest path over the curved Earth from you to the Kaaba, called a great circle. On a flat map this path looks curved. That is why the qibla from New York is northeast, about 58°, even though Makkah is south of New York on most maps. The shortest route crosses the Atlantic towards Europe and then bends down to Arabia.

True north and magnetic north

The degrees are measured from true north, the direction of the North Pole. A compass needle points to magnetic north, which can be many degrees away. In New York it is about 12° west of true north, and in London about 1° east. This tool takes that difference, the magnetic declination, from the World Magnetic Model 2025 for your exact spot, and shows the bearing to use with an ordinary compass.

How to calibrate your phone's compass

  • Move away from metal, magnets, speakers and laptop cases.
  • Hold the phone flat and wave it slowly in a figure 8 a few times.
  • On Android, check Google Maps: if it asks you to calibrate, follow its steps.
  • On iPhone, turn on Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, System Services, Compass Calibration.

Qibla finder not working?

  • iPhone and iPad: Safari asks for permission to use Motion and Orientation when you press Start. If you said no, close the tab and open it again, or allow it in Settings, Safari.
  • Android: use Chrome or Samsung Internet. Some cheaper phones have no compass sensor; use the degrees or the map instead.
  • Desktop computers have no compass. Use the degrees with a compass, or the map.
  • Location blocked: pick your city from the list, or type your coordinates.

How exact do you need to be?

Hanafi position

Someone who can see the Kaaba must face the Kaaba itself. Someone far away must face its direction (jihah), not its exact point. A small turn to the left or right does not affect the prayer, and many Hanafi scholars allow up to 45° either side, as long as some part of the face is still toward the qibla. If you prayed after doing your best to find it and later learn you were wrong, the prayer is still valid.2

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
The stronger view is that you must aim at the Kaaba itself (ayn), by your best effort, even from far away. So try to be as exact as you can.
Maliki, Hanbali
Someone far away faces the direction of the Kaaba, as in the Hanafi school.

Finding the qibla without a compass

  • The mihrab of a local masjid shows the qibla. Use it to line up a landmark you can see from home.
  • The sun is directly above the Kaaba twice a year, around 28 May at 12:18 pm and 16 July at 12:27 pm Makkah time. At those moments, a stick's shadow points directly away from the qibla anywhere the sun is up.
  • Ask people who live nearby and pray regularly.

Questions

Good to know

What is the qibla direction from my location?

Press Use my location above. The tool shows the qibla in degrees clockwise from true north, the compass bearing to use, and the distance to the Kaaba.

Is the qibla east or northeast from the US?

Northeast. From New York it is about 58° from north, from Chicago about 49° and from Los Angeles about 24°. The shortest route over the globe heads northeast, not southeast.

Why does my phone show a different qibla from my masjid?

Phone compasses are easily thrown off by metal and magnets, and many apps forget the difference between magnetic and true north. Some older masjids also used a flat-map direction. Calibrate your phone and compare with the degrees here.

Does this qibla finder store my location?

No. Your location is used only in your browser to work out the direction and is never sent to our servers.

Is my prayer valid if I was slightly off the qibla?

Yes. For someone far from Makkah, facing the general direction is enough in the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools, and a prayer made after a genuine effort stays valid even if you later find you were off.

How do I find the qibla without a compass?

Use the mihrab of a nearby masjid, ask local Muslims, or use the sun on the two days a year it is directly over the Kaaba, around 28 May and 16 July.
