Questions Belief

Do Muslims believe in Abraham?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. Ibrahim (Abraham) is one of the greatest prophets in Islam, called the intimate friend (khalil) of Allah (4:125). Muslims see Islam as the religion of Ibrahim, send blessings on him in every prayer, and remember him in Hajj and Eid al-Adha. Believing in him is part of faith.

Hanafi position

Belief in Ibrahim as a prophet and messenger is fard, and denying his prophethood is kufr. Sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ and on Ibrahim in the final sitting of prayer (the Salat Ibrahimiyya) is sunnah in the Hanafi school.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Blessing the Prophet ﷺ in the final tashahhud is a pillar of the prayer; adding the blessing on Ibrahim is sunnah.
Hanbali
Blessing the Prophet ﷺ in the final tashahhud is a pillar of the prayer in the relied-upon view; the rest of the Salat Ibrahimiyya is sunnah.

Explanation

The Quran mentions Ibrahim in many surahs, and one surah is named after him. Allah "took Abraham as an intimate friend" (4:125), and the Prophet ﷺ said Allah had taken him as a friend just as He took Ibrahim. Ibrahim is one of the five messengers of firm resolve, with Nuh, Musa, Isa and Muhammad ﷺ (33:7).

Muslims know his story well: he rejected his people's idols and broke them, was thrown into a fire that Allah made "coolness and safety" (21:69), left his wife Hajar and son Ismail in the valley of Makkah, and later built the Kaaba with Ismail (2:127). He was ready to sacrifice his son at Allah's command. Read the full story in Abraham in Islam, and on the son see Ismail or Ishaq?

The Quran says: "Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim" (3:67). Muslims believe his pure monotheism is the root that Judaism, Christianity and Islam share, and that Islam restores it.

Ibrahim is part of daily Muslim life. In every prayer Muslims say, "O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings on Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim." The rites of Hajj follow the steps of Ibrahim, Hajar and Ismail, and the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha remembers his. So the God of Abraham is the God Muslims worship. The evidence

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:125

And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allah while being a doer of good and follows the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth? And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.

Ibrahim's special rank as the friend of Allah.

Quran, Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:67

Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah]. And he was not of the polytheists.

Ibrahim was a pure monotheist submitting to Allah.
