Questions Children

Can a child give the adhan or lead other children in prayer?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes, if he is old enough to understand what he is doing. In the Hanafi school the adhan of a discerning boy is valid, though an adult is better, and the adhan of a small child who does not understand is repeated. A boy may lead other children in prayer, but not adults, even in taraweeh.

Hanafi position

The adhan of a discerning boy (sabi 'aqil) is valid without dislike in the main transmitted view; that of a child without discernment is makruh and repeated. A boy before puberty may lead boys, but adults may not pray behind him, in fard or nafl prayers.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
A discerning boy may lead adults in prayer, including fard prayers, though an adult is better.
Hanbali
A boy may not lead adults in fard prayers, but may in nafl prayers such as taraweeh.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ told a group of young men: when the time of prayer comes, let one of you give the adhan, and let the eldest of you lead. The adhan is a call that anyone sane and Muslim can make, while leading the prayer carries more conditions. The schools differ on boys leading adults, as shown above.

The adhan, in the Hanafi school:

  • A boy who understands the words and the purpose, usually around seven or older, may give the adhan for the family or the mosque. It counts.
  • An adult man is better, especially as the regular muadhdhin of a mosque.
  • A small child who is just repeating sounds does not fulfil the sunnah, and the adhan is given again.
  • Girls and women do not give the adhan for men. See adhan and iqamah.

Leading prayer:

  • A boy may lead other boys, for example in a madrasa or at home with siblings. This is good training.
  • Adults may not follow a boy who has not reached puberty in the Hanafi school, even in taraweeh. A young hafiz can recite in taraweeh after puberty, or lead the children's group before it. See who should lead the prayer.

Letting a child give the adhan at home is a wonderful way to build love for the prayer. Teach the words with the adhan in English, and see when children start praying.
