Can you see Prophet Muhammad in a dream?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever sees him in a dream has truly seen him, because Shaytan cannot take his form. Scholars add that this applies when he appears as he was described. Such a dream is glad tidings, not a source of rulings, and no special prayer guarantees seeing him.

Hanafi position

Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a dream in his known description is a true vision. It cannot establish or change any ruling of the sharia, and anything said in a dream that contradicts the sharia is rejected.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Shaytan cannot take my form. In another narration he said that whoever sees him in a dream will see him when awake, which scholars explain as seeing him in the Hereafter, or as a promise to those who lived in his time.

Muhammad ibn Sirin, the famous early interpreter of dreams, used to ask a person who said he saw the Prophet ﷺ to describe him. If the description did not match, he would say it was not him. Al-Bukhari mentions this, and scholars take it as a guide: the dream is a true vision when he appears with the features his Companions recorded, such as those in the Shama'il of al-Tirmidhi.

Limits the scholars set:

  • A dream cannot add to the religion. If someone claims the Prophet ﷺ told him in a dream to do something against the sharia, it is rejected, because the religion was completed in his lifetime.
  • A dreamer's memory may be unclear, so even a true dream is not treated as proof in a dispute.
  • A dream of him is glad tidings, not a sign that the person is a saint.

Is there a way to make it happen? No authentic hadith gives a special prayer or dhikr that guarantees seeing him. Some books list such practices without reliable sources. What draws a person closer is what he taught: following his sunnah, sending salawat on him often, and loving him. If Allah grants the dream, thank Him and tell only people you trust. The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Ahzaab 33:21

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.

Following his example, not chasing dreams, is what Allah asks.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • Fath al-Bari (Ibn Hajar), Kitab al-Ta'bir, chapter on whoever sees the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. Discusses Ibn Sirin's condition that he be seen in his known description, and that dreams do not establish rulings.
