Short answer
No. Using your left hand is not haram, and being left-handed is not a sin. The sunnah is to use the right hand for eating, drinking, giving and receiving and other honourable acts, and the left for cleaning yourself. Writing, playing sports and other tasks with the left hand are fine.
Using the right hand for honourable acts is sunnah, and eating or drinking with the left without need is makruh. Using the left hand for other daily tasks is mubah, and a left-handed person is not blamed for his nature.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Aisha said the Prophet ﷺ liked to start with the right in everything: putting on his sandals, combing his hair, his purification and all his affairs. He also said: let each of you eat with his right hand, drink with his right hand, take with his right hand and give with his right hand, for Shaytan eats and drinks with his left.
So the scholars set out a simple rule. The right hand is for honourable things, and the left for their opposite:
- Right: eating, drinking, giving and receiving, shaking hands, holding the Quran, starting wudu, putting on clothes and shoes, entering the mosque.
- Left: cleaning after the toilet, blowing the nose, taking off shoes, leaving the mosque, entering the bathroom.
Everything else is open. Writing, typing, throwing a ball, using tools or holding a phone with your left hand is fine. Many left-handed people were told as children that they were doing something sinful; that is not true. Allah made people different, and there is no blame for how He made you.
For a left-handed person, the main sunnah to train is eating and drinking with the right hand, since the hadith names these directly. If you have an injury, a disability or a real need, using the left hand is permitted without any dislike. When giving something to someone, try to hand it over with the right, or with both hands.
The four schools agree on these sunnahs. For eating specifically, see is it haram to eat with your left hand, and more in Sunnahs of daily life.
