Questions Dress and appearance

Can you shave or pluck your unibrow in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes, according to many Hanafi muftis. The hair that grows between the eyebrows and joins them is not part of the brow itself, so men and women may remove it by shaving, plucking, threading or waxing. Thinning or reshaping the eyebrows themselves is a different matter and is not allowed.

Hanafi position

Removing the hair between the eyebrows is permissible (mubah), because it is not the eyebrow and removing it restores a normal look. Thinning or reshaping the brows themselves falls under the curse on namas and is haram. Some muftis are more cautious and advise leaving it unless it looks unusual.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that Allah has cursed women who pluck their eyebrows (al-mutanammisat) to beautify themselves, changing the creation of Allah, and he said the Prophet ﷺ had cursed them. The Hanafi scholars explain namas as removing hair from the eyebrows to make them thinner or give them a new shape.

The hair in the gap between the brows is not part of either brow. A unibrow is also not the usual look for most people, so taking it away brings the face back to normal rather than altering a normal feature for beauty. For this reason many Hanafi muftis, including fatwas from Deobandi institutions, allow removing it. The same applies to men: clearing a unibrow is grooming, not copying women, as long as he stops there.

  • Allowed: removing the hair in the gap between the brows, by any method.
  • Not allowed: using the clean-up as a chance to arch, thin or move the brow line, or to add a slit.
  • Careful: if you are not sure where the brow begins, take less. A threader or barber will often go further than you asked, so tell them to clear the middle only.

Some muftis prefer that you leave even this hair unless it is thick enough to look unusual, so if you want the safest course, leave a light unibrow alone. For the brows themselves see is plucking eyebrows haram, for stray hairs see trimming your eyebrows, and for men see can men pluck their eyebrows.

The evidence

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:119

And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them [sinful] desires, and I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah." And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a clear loss.

Satan's promise to make people change Allah's creation, the reason the scholars give for the ruling on namas.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Hazr wa al-Ibaha, section on looking and touching. Explains namas and allows removing hair that is not normal for a person.
  • al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, Kitab al-Karahiyya, chapter on circumcision, hair and nails. No harm in taking from the eyebrows and face hair as long as one does not look like effeminate men.
