Can men pluck or shape their eyebrows?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No. A man may trim a few long or stray hairs and clear a unibrow, but plucking, threading or waxing his eyebrows into a shape is not allowed. It falls under the hadith on namas, and it copies a women's beauty practice.

Hanafi position

Shaping the eyebrows is haram for men as it is for women, with the added sin of imitating women (tashabbuh). Trimming overlong hairs back to a normal look and removing the hair between the brows are permissible.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The hadith on namas names women because shaping the brows was a women's practice. The scholars apply it to men too, for two reasons. The reason the hadith gives, changing the creation of Allah for beauty, applies to anyone. And Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women, which makes it worse for a man.

The Hanafi texts set the line clearly: there is no harm in a man taking from his eyebrows and the hair of his face, as long as he does not end up looking like the effeminate. So tidying is fine, while a groomed, arched or thinned look is not.

  • Fine: trimming long hairs that stick out or fall into the eyes, and removing a unibrow.
  • Not fine: plucking or threading the underside or top of the brow to shape it, waxing an arch, or cutting slits into it.
  • At the barber: many barbers thread or wax brows as part of a cut. Ask them to clear only the middle and trim long hairs, or skip it.

If you have had your brows shaped, simply let them grow back and repent; it does not affect your wudu or prayer. See also removing a unibrow, trimming eyebrows and can Muslim men wear makeup.

The evidence

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:119

And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them [sinful] desires, and I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah." And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a clear loss.

Satan's promise to make people change Allah's creation, the reason the scholars give for the ruling on namas.
