Questions Dress and appearance

Can you shave your beard for a job, the army or a mask fit test?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Not just because a workplace prefers it. The beard is wajib in the Hanafi school, so first ask for a religious accommodation or a workable alternative, such as a different kind of respirator. If shaving truly seems unavoidable, take your exact case to a mufti before you decide.

Hanafi position

Growing the beard to a fist is wajib, and shaving it or trimming it below a fist remains makruh tahrimi when done for work. A real necessity can change the ruling in a specific case, such as a genuine risk to life or health with no alternative, but a mufti must weigh it; convenience or an employer's preference is not necessity.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
The relied-upon view of al-Rafi'i and al-Nawawi is that shaving the beard is makruh rather than haram, so Shafi'i scholars give more room in cases of work pressure, though many Shafi'is held it haram.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ commanded men to let the beard grow, and the Hanafi school holds this to be wajib; see is shaving your beard haram. Earning a living is also a duty and a virtue. When the two seem to clash, the starting point is that obeying Allah comes first, and that whoever is mindful of Allah, He makes a way out for him.

Ask first. In many countries the law protects religious practice at work, and many employers, health services, police forces and armed forces have granted beard accommodations. Explain in writing that the beard is a religious obligation for you, and ask what options exist. Do not assume the answer is no.

Respirator fit tests. Tight-fitting masks used in hospitals, ambulances, fire services and labs must seal against the skin, so a beard can fail the test. Many workplaces can provide alternatives such as powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) with a loose hood. Ask your occupational health team about these before shaving.

If nothing works. A mufti will ask how serious the need is, whether it is temporary, and whether other work is realistically open to you. Do not decide this alone, and do not treat a preference as a necessity. For a skin condition such as razor bumps, trimming with clippers instead of a razor often solves the problem; ask your doctor. If you have shaved, repent and let the beard grow when you can. For pressure from family, see shaving the beard when your wife or parents ask.

Ask a mufti about your own case. This answer explains the general ruling. When the details of your situation matter, as they do here, ask a qualified mufti and give them the full facts. Where to ask a scholar.

The evidence

Quran, Surah At-Talaaq 65:2

And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for [the acceptance of] Allah. That is instructed to whoever should believe in Allah and the Last day. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out

Mindfulness of Allah brings a way out, including in matters of work and provision.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:286

Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

The basis for relief in real hardship, which a mufti weighs case by case.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • al-Durr al-Mukhtar with Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Sawm, chapter on what does and does not break the fast. Taking from the beard below a fist was permitted by no one.
  • al-Ashbah wa al-Naza'ir (Ibn Nujaym), The fifth principle: harm is to be removed. The rule that necessity permits what is otherwise forbidden, and that it is measured by its extent.
