Short answer
No. Halal means permitted, and it covers everything a Muslim eats, drinks and uses: meat, but also drinks, sweets, cheese, medicines and ingredients like gelatin and alcohol, and even how money is earned. Halal food is not a cuisine either: Greek, Indian or vegan food is halal only if what is in it is halal.
Everything is halal by default except what Allah has forbidden. For food, that means pork, carrion and unslaughtered meat, flowing blood, intoxicants and the forbidden animals, together with any food mixed with them.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Halal is an Arabic word meaning permitted. Its opposite is haram, forbidden. Meat gets the most attention because it has the most conditions, but the word applies to every part of life. Allah tells believers to eat what is lawful and good, and the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah is good and accepts only what is good.
For food, this means:
- Meat: a halal animal, slaughtered with Allah's name.
- No pork, in any form, including lard and pork gelatin.
- No alcoholic drinks, including in sauces and desserts.
- Ingredients: gelatin, rennet, enzymes, carmine, emulsifiers and flavourings can come from forbidden sources.
- Fish, fruit, vegetables, grains and dairy are halal unless something forbidden is added.
Some common confusions:
- Halal is not a cuisine. A halal cart serving chicken over rice is not halal because it is Mediterranean; it is halal if the chicken is.
- Vegetarian or vegan is not automatically halal. It can still contain wine, alcohol-based flavourings or insect colouring, though it removes most meat questions.
- Halal does not mean blessed food. It means permitted; the blessing comes from bismillah and gratitude.
Beyond food, halal applies to cosmetics, medicines, clothes, earnings and conduct. Read more in halal and haram in Islam and why Muslims eat halal, and check ingredients with the halal food checker.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:168
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ حَلَٰلًۭا طَيِّبًۭا وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌ ﴿١٦٨﴾
O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
The command to eat what is lawful covers all food.
Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:88
وَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَٰلًۭا طَيِّبًۭا ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنتُم بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿٨٨﴾
And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.
Lawful and good is the standard for everything eaten.
Sahih Muslim 1015
Sahih... إن الله طيب لا يقبل إلا طيبا ...
"Allah is good and accepts only what is good."
Shows that halal covers food, drink, clothing and earnings, as the hadith goes on to explain.
