Short answer
Not in the Hanafi school. Crawfish (crayfish) are freshwater crustaceans, not fish, and the Hanafi school eats only fish from the water, so crawfish are makruh tahrimi (treated as forbidden). The Maliki and Hanbali schools allow them. For those who follow them, a crawfish boil is halal if nothing haram is added.
Crawfish, like crab and lobster, are water animals that are not fish, so they are makruh tahrimi and are not eaten, nor are stocks and sauces made from them.
Other madhhabs
- Maliki
- Crawfish are halal, since all water animals are lawful.
- Hanbali
- Crawfish are halal; the water creatures excluded are the frog, the crocodile and the snake.
- Shafi'i
- Scholars of the school differ: animals that live only in water are lawful, but the crab, which also lives on land, is forbidden in the main view, and some apply that to crawfish.
Explanation
Crawfish, also called crayfish, crawdads or mudbugs, look like small lobsters and live in rivers, lakes and swamps. They are the centre of the crawfish boil in Louisiana and Texas, of crawfish etouffee, of Chinese spicy crayfish, and of the Swedish crayfish party.
The Hanafi school reads the Quran's permission for the game of the water together with the ban on khaba'ith (repulsive things) and the hadith that names fish and locusts as the lawful dead animals. It concludes that only fish is eaten from the water. Crawfish have shells and legs and are not fish, so they take the ruling of crab and lobster. Shrimp is a separate case on which Hanafi scholars differ (see shrimp).
If your school allows crawfish, check how they are cooked:
- boils often include pork sausage such as andouille, which flavours everything in the pot;
- some recipes add beer to the boiling water (see food cooked with beer);
- seasoning blends and butter sauces are usually fine, but check for bacon or wine.
Followers of the Maliki and Hanbali schools eat crawfish with good evidence, so Hanafis should not criticise them, and should keep to their own school themselves. See what seafood is halal.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:96
Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.
The verse on water game, read by the Hanafis as fish only.
Quran, Surah Al-A'raaf 7:157
Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
The ban on khaba'ith, part of the Hanafi reasoning.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3314
Graded sahih...
"Two dead things and two bloods have been made lawful for us."
Names fish and locusts as the lawful dead, the Hanafi basis for allowing only fish.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Dhaba'ih, on water animals. Nothing from the water is eaten except fish.
- Minhaj al-Talibin, Kitab al-At'ima. What lives both on land and in water, such as the frog and the crab, is forbidden.
- al-Mughni (Ibn Qudama), Kitab al-At'ima. Water animals are lawful except the frog, the crocodile and the snake.
