Is escargot (snail) halal?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No, not in the Hanafi school. Land snails are among the creeping creatures the school counts as khaba'ith (repulsive things), and sea snails are not fish. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools also forbid land snails. The Maliki school allows them if killed in the proper way.

Hanafi position

Snails are not halal. Land snails count among the hasharat (creeping creatures) that are not eaten, and sea snails such as whelks and conch fall under the rule that only fish is eaten from the water.

Other madhhabs
Maliki
Land snails are lawful when killed with the intention of making them lawful and with Allah's name, for example by boiling or piercing them. Sea snails are lawful as sea animals.
Shafi'i
Land snails are not eaten, as repulsive creatures; sea snails are lawful, like other animals that live only in the sea.
Hanbali
Land snails are not eaten; sea snails are lawful as sea animals.

Explanation

Escargot is a French dish of cooked land snails, usually served in garlic and herb butter. Snails are also eaten in Spain, Morocco and parts of Asia, and sea snails such as whelks, periwinkles and conch appear in seafood shops and Caribbean cooking.

The Hanafi school forbids eating creeping creatures (hasharat) such as insects, worms, snails, rodents and lizards, reading them as part of the khaba'ith that the Prophet ﷺ was sent to forbid. Only the locust is excepted, by hadith. Sea snails are no different in the end, since in the Hanafi school only fish is eaten from the water.

The Maliki school is the one that allows land snails. Its scholars require that they be killed deliberately with Allah's name, rather than found dead. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools forbid land snails but allow sea snails along with other sea animals.

Points to check:

  • Escargot is often cooked with white wine, which would make it haram for everyone.
  • Snail slime (snail mucin) in skincare is a different question; snails have no flowing blood, so it is not impure, and using it on the skin is not eating it.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-A'raaf 7:157

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
