Is frog meat halal?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No, in the Hanafi school and in the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools too. Frogs are not fish and are counted among creatures that are not eaten, and the Prophet ﷺ forbade killing frogs. The Maliki school is the exception: it allows frogs.

Hanafi position

Frogs, whether from land or water, are haram to eat. Toads and tadpoles take the same ruling.

Other madhhabs
Maliki
Frogs may be eaten.

Explanation

Frog legs are eaten in French, Chinese, Vietnamese and Cajun cooking, and are sold frozen in some Asian supermarkets.

The Hanafi school holds that the only water animal eaten is fish, and that creeping land creatures counted as khaba'ith (repulsive things), such as reptiles, amphibians and insects other than locusts, are not eaten. The frog falls under both.

There is also a specific hadith. A doctor asked the Prophet ﷺ about using a frog in a medicine, and he forbade him from killing it. The scholars reason that an animal that may not be killed even for medicine may not be killed for food. That is why the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, which allow almost every sea animal, make an exception for the frog. The Maliki school, which takes the widest view of what may be eaten, allows it.

What to watch: frog legs (cuisses de grenouille) on French menus, Chinese and Vietnamese dishes where frog is sometimes called field chicken, and Cajun fried frog legs. See what animals are haram and snake meat.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-A'raaf 7:157

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.

The ban on khaba'ith, which the scholars apply to frogs.
