Is halal meat healthier?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Not automatically. Muslims eat halal because Allah commands it, not mainly for health. Halal slaughter drains the flowing blood and Islam asks for good, wholesome food, but halal does not mean organic, grass-fed, lean or free of antibiotics. A halal burger can be as unhealthy as any other.

Hanafi position

Only halal meat may be eaten, whatever its health benefits. The Quran's call to eat what is tayyib (good and wholesome) encourages healthy, clean and humanely raised food, but that is not a condition for meat to be halal.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Quran pairs halal (lawful) with tayyib (good) more than once: eat of what is lawful and good. Halal is the legal side: the right animal, slaughtered the right way. Tayyib is wider: food that is wholesome, clean and good for you.

What halal slaughter does: it cuts the jugular veins so that the flowing blood, which the Quran forbids, drains out, and it rules out animals that died of disease or injury before slaughter. Some people say halal meat tastes better or keeps longer. Those claims are not why Muslims eat it, and our faith does not rest on them.

What halal does not guarantee: organic feed, free-range farming, no antibiotics or hormones, low fat, or good welfare on the farm. Those depend on the farm and the certifier. Halal chicken from a factory farm is still factory-farmed chicken.

A Muslim eats halal as worship. If you also want healthier or more ethical meat, look for farming standards on top of halal certification, and remember the Sunnah's own health advice: eat moderately (see is overeating haram). See also why Muslims eat halal and is halal slaughter cruel.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:168

O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

Halal and tayyib go together.

Quran 2:168, translation by Sahih International

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:173

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Blood is forbidden, which is why slaughter drains it.

Quran 2:173, translation by Sahih International

Where the ruling is recorded

  • al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Dhaba'ih. Slaughter is prescribed to drain the flowing blood, which is impure, from the meat.
