Questions Food and drink

Is it haram to have alcohol in your house?

Checked by our team

Short answer

A Muslim may not buy, keep or serve alcoholic drinks in his own home, even for guests. If you live with non-Muslim family who keep alcohol, it is their responsibility, not your sin, as long as you do not buy, serve or drink it. Touching wine is not a sin in itself, but it is impure, so wash it off.

Hanafi position

Keeping khamr is not permitted for a Muslim, who should pour it away, and buying, serving or giving it is haram. Wine is a heavy impurity, so a hand or cloth that touched it is washed. Alcohol in cleaning products and sanitisers that is not from grapes or dates is a separate matter.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

When wine was forbidden, the Companions poured out what they had, and the streets of Madinah ran with it. The Prophet ﷺ cursed not only the drinker but also the one who serves it, sells it, buys it, carries it and the one it is carried to. So a Muslim does not keep a drinks cabinet, stock wine for guests or bring alcohol home as a gift.

Common situations:

  • Living with non-Muslim parents or a spouse's family: their alcohol is not your sin. Do not buy or serve it, and you may ask, kindly, that it be kept away from your food.
  • A housemate's beer in a shared fridge: tolerated if it is theirs; keep your food apart.
  • A house you just bought or rented with alcohol in it: pour it away rather than sell or give it.
  • Alcohol for cooking: not allowed (see cooking with wine).

Touching and being near: wine is a heavy impurity in the Hanafi school, so if it gets on your hands or clothes, wash it before praying. Touching a closed bottle is not a sin. Sitting at a table where wine is being drunk is discouraged in the hadith; at work or family meals, keep away from it where you can. Hand sanitiser and products with alcohol not made from grapes or dates are covered in is alcohol in perfume najis.

For work that involves alcohol, see selling alcohol and working where alcohol is served.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:90

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.

Commands avoiding intoxicants, not only drinking them.
