Is soy lecithin halal?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. Soy lecithin (E322) is extracted from soybean oil, so it is halal. Sunflower and rapeseed lecithin are halal too, and so is egg lecithin. Lecithin is one of the emulsifiers you do not need to worry about.

Hanafi position

Lecithin from plants or eggs is halal, like anything from a pure source that causes no harm.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Lecithin is an emulsifier: it helps fat and water mix. It is in chocolate, margarine, baked goods, cooking sprays, instant drinks and supplements, and on labels it appears as soy lecithin, sunflower lecithin, lecithin or E322.

Lecithin is a group of fatty compounds found in seeds and in egg yolk. Soy lecithin is a by-product of refining soybean oil: the gums are separated from the oil, dried and sold. No animal ingredient or alcohol is involved. Food is halal by default, and plant ingredients like this need no certification. The four schools agree.

Not every emulsifier is as simple. These can come from animal fat and need a halal source:

So a chocolate bar whose only emulsifier is soy or sunflower lecithin is fine on that front. Still read the whole label for other ingredients, such as alcohol-based flavours or animal fats, or use the halal food checker.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:88

And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.

What Allah provides is lawful and good to eat.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:168

O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

Food from the earth is lawful by default.
