Short answer
Sunnah foods are foods the Prophet ﷺ ate, loved or praised: dates, honey, milk, barley (as talbina), vinegar, olive oil, black seed, pumpkin, cucumber and watermelon with dates, and sweet things. Eating them out of love for him is rewarded, but they are not obligatory and are not a substitute for medicine.
Eating a food because the Prophet ﷺ ate or praised it is a good act (mustahabb) when done to follow him. No particular food is obligatory, and claims of cures beyond what authentic hadith say should be avoided.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
The list below keeps to foods with authentic reports:
- Dates: his staple food, used to break the fast and before Eid al-Fitr (see dates).
- Honey: the Quran says it holds healing for people, and he loved sweet things and honey.
- Milk: praised in the Quran as pure and pleasant to drink.
- Barley: eaten as bread and as talbina, a barley porridge with milk he recommended for the sick and grieving.
- Vinegar: he called it an excellent condiment.
- Olive oil: he said to eat it and use it on the body, as it comes from a blessed tree.
- Black seed: he said it is a cure for every disease except death.
- Pumpkin or gourd: Anas saw him pick out the pieces of gourd from a dish.
- Cucumber and watermelon with fresh dates.
- Meat, including the shoulder of lamb, and truffles.
Two cautions. First, the medical hadith describe real benefits, but they do not replace a doctor, and promising cures for specific illnesses goes beyond what the texts say. Second, many lists online include foods backed only by weak reports or none; keep to what is authentic.
The deeper sunnah is in how the Prophet ﷺ ate: simply, without excess and with gratitude. See the sunnahs of eating and sunnahs of daily life.
