Questions Hajj, umrah and qurbani

Does Hajj make up for missed prayers?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No. Hajj can wipe the sin of having missed prayers, but the prayers themselves are still owed and must be made up (qada). The same goes for missed fasts, unpaid zakat and debts. The four schools agree.

Hanafi position

Making up every missed fard prayer is fard, and making up witr is wajib; Hajj does not drop that duty. What an accepted Hajj may remove is the sin of the delay. Missed Ramadan fasts and unpaid zakat likewise remain owed.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever misses a prayer by forgetting must pray it when he remembers, and that this is its only expiation. A prayer missed on purpose is owed even more, so scholars of all four schools say it must be made up. Hajj is a great act of worship, but it is not a replacement for another obligation.

Ibn Abidin and others explain the hadith that Hajj wipes away sins this way: the sin of delaying the prayers is forgiven, but the debt of the prayers stays, just as a debt of money stays after Hajj. If a pilgrim keeps delaying the qada after Hajj, he is sinning again.

  • Before Hajj: start your qada now. Many pilgrims use the extra time in Makkah to pray missed prayers, which is a good use of it.
  • How many: if you do not know, estimate on the cautious side. Our qada calculator helps you count, and making up years of missed prayers explains the method.
  • Fasts and zakat: make them up and pay what is owed for past years.
  • Debts: repay them or arrange repayment; see Hajj with debt.

Hajj is a turning point. Use it to resolve never to leave a prayer again, and to carry the backlog with steady daily qada until it is done.

The evidence

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:103

And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.

Prayer is a fixed duty that remains owed.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Hajj, on what Hajj expiates. Hajj removes the sin of delay but not the obligation of qada and debts.
  • Nur al-Idah with Maraqi al-Falah, Chapter on making up missed prayers. Qada of missed fard prayers is fard and of witr is wajib.
