What does Islam say about autism?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Autism is a difference in how a person's brain develops, not a punishment, a sin, or a sign of weak faith. Autistic Muslims are full members of the ummah. Many are fully accountable like anyone else; where a person lacks the understanding that religious duties require, the duties are lifted. Each case is different, so ask a mufti about specific duties.

Hanafi position

Religious obligation rests on sanity ('aql) and puberty. An autistic person who understands is accountable like anyone else, with the ease the Shariah gives for real hardship. One whose understanding is absent is not held to account, as the Prophet ﷺ said the pen is lifted from such a person.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Allah created people with different abilities, and He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth but at your hearts and deeds. Autism is not caused by a parent's sin, by the evil eye, or by jinn, and parents should not be blamed or shamed for it.

Accountability. The Prophet ﷺ said the pen is lifted from three: the sleeper until he wakes, the child until he reaches puberty, and the one lacking reason until he regains it. Autism is a spectrum. Many autistic adults understand fully, so prayer, fasting and the rest apply to them, and they are rewarded for every extra effort it costs them. Where a person has a severe intellectual disability and cannot understand, the duties are lifted and they are among those Allah has excused.

Ease within the rules. Islam has built-in ease for real hardship. Practical examples families ask about:

  • teaching prayer in small steps, with visual guides, without harshness
  • a quiet corner, ear defenders or a familiar spot at the mosque
  • whether crowd or noise distress excuses someone from Jumuah or congregation in a given case: ask a mufti, since it depends on the person

For communities. Masjids should welcome autistic children and adults, not shush or remove them. The ayah that there is no blame on the blind, the lame or the sick shows that the ummah makes room for difference.

For diagnosis, therapy and support, follow a qualified doctor and specialists. Making dua and reciting over your child alongside that care is good, but it does not replace it.

Ask a mufti about your own case. This answer explains the general ruling. When the details of your situation matter, as they do here, ask a qualified mufti and give them the full facts. Where to ask a scholar.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:286

Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

Duties follow capacity.

Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:61

There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand.

Allah makes allowance for disability and illness.
