Short answer
Yes. You become Muslim the moment you sincerely say the shahada, whether alone at home, on a video call or in a mosque. No witness, imam or certificate is a condition in any of the four schools. Saying it in front of Muslims is still good: it brings you support, and a certificate can help with things like an umrah visa or a nikah.
Saying the shahada with belief makes a person Muslim before Allah even if nobody hears it. Declaring it before other Muslims is recommended so that they can treat you as a Muslim, for example in marriage, prayer and burial.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Islam is between you and Allah, and He hears you wherever you are. If you believe, say the shahada aloud: Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah. See the shahada page for the Arabic, pronunciation and meaning. The Prophet ﷺ was angry with a Companion who doubted a man's shahada, asking him: "Did you cut open his heart to know?" People's word of faith is accepted.
Saying it online is common now. Many mosques and Islamic centres will hear your shahada on a video call and welcome you. A few things to know:
- No fee. Nobody may charge you for becoming Muslim.
- Certificate: optional for your faith, but useful. Some mosques ask for one before a nikah, and converts are often asked for proof of Islam when applying for umrah or Hajj.
- Legal registration: in some countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, conversion is also registered with an Islamic authority for legal purposes. That is a legal step, not a condition of your faith.
- Ghusl: take a ghusl after the shahada.
The real risk of converting alone is staying alone. Find a local mosque or a new Muslim group when you can, even if you took your shahada at home. Ask them to say it again with you if you want a certificate. Then learn step by step with the new Muslim guide and what to learn first.
The evidence
Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:94
O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah, investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace "You are not a believer," aspiring for the goods of worldly life; for with Allah are many acquisitions. You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allah conferred His favor upon you, so investigate. Indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
A person's outward declaration of faith is to be accepted.
Quran, Surah Qaaf 50:16
And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein
Allah hears your shahada wherever you say it.
Sahih Muslim 96
Sahih...
"Did you cut open his heart so that you would know?"
The Prophet ﷺ accepted the shahada as spoken and rejected doubting it.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Fiqh al-Akbar, the section on the definition of iman. Faith is belief in the heart affirmed by the tongue.
- Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Jihad, Bab al-Murtadd, discussion of how a person becomes Muslim. No witness or ceremony is a condition of entering Islam.
