What changes when a woman converts to Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

A woman becomes Muslim exactly as a man does, by saying the shahada with belief. After that she takes on the same core duties, plus the hijab and modest dress, the rulings on periods, and the rule that a Muslim woman marries only a Muslim man. Take it step by step: belief and prayer come first.

Hanafi position

Covering the body, including the hair, in front of men who are not mahram is fard. Hijab is not a condition of becoming Muslim, and delaying it is a shortcoming to work on, not a loss of Islam. Prayer is left during menstruation and not made up, while missed Ramadan fasts are made up. A Muslim woman's marriage to a non-Muslim man is not valid.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The first person to believe in the Prophet ﷺ was a woman, Khadijah. The Quran records the pledge of the believing women who came to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said women are the twin halves of men. Your faith and your reward stand fully on their own.

  • Prayer: the five daily prayers, with some differences in posture. See how women pray.
  • Hijab: covering the hair and body in loose clothing in front of men outside the family. The four schools agree the hair is covered; they differ on details such as the face. See hijab in Islam.
  • Periods: no prayer or fasting during menstruation, and the missed prayers are not made up. Fasts are.
  • Marriage: a Muslim woman may marry only a Muslim man. If you are married when you convert, read when one spouse converts and why a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim.

Many converts find the hijab the hardest step because of family, school or work. It is a real duty, but it is not the door into Islam. Some sisters start with modest, loose clothing and a scarf at prayer, then wear it full time as their confidence grows. Do not let anyone tell you that you are not a real Muslim while you work toward it.

Islam also gives you rights: your own money stays yours, your mahr belongs to you, and no one may force you into a marriage. Find sisters at a local mosque to learn with, and read our new Muslim guide.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Mumtahana 60:12

O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Women gave their own pledge of faith to the Prophet ﷺ.

Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:31

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

The command of the head covering and modest dress.

Quran, Surah Al-Mumtahana 60:10

O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give the disbelievers what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

A Muslim woman may not stay married to a non-Muslim man.
