Is Jesus God in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

No. In Islam Jesus (Isa) is one of the greatest prophets and messengers of Allah, born miraculously of Mary, but a created human being, not God and not the son of God. The Quran says he himself called people to worship "Allah, my Lord and your Lord".

Hanafi position

Believing that Allah is one, with no partner, son or equal, is the foundation of faith. Believing that Jesus is God, part of God or the son of God is shirk and is not compatible with Islam. All Muslim schools agree on this.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Quran is direct on this. It says the Messiah, son of Mary, "was not but a messenger", and that he and his mother both ate food, a sign of being human and in need. It tells the People of the Book not to say "Three", because Allah is one God, "exalted above having a son". When Jesus spoke as a baby in the cradle, his first words were: "I am the servant of Allah."

Muslims answer the usual reasons given for his divinity from the Quran itself:

  • Born without a father: Adam had neither father nor mother, and the Quran says Jesus is like Adam: Allah said "Be" and he was.
  • Miracles: he healed the blind and raised the dead, each time "by permission of Allah".
  • "Word" and "spirit" from Allah: Muslims understand these as a word of command that created him and a soul created by Allah and honoured by being linked to Him, as the Kaaba is called the House of Allah.

The Quran also tells of a scene on the Day of Judgement where Allah asks Jesus whether he told people to worship him and his mother, and Jesus answers that he never said what he had no right to say. See Quran 5:116.

For Muslims, denying his divinity is not disrespect. Muslims love Jesus and say "peace be upon him" at his name, and believe they honour him most by holding to what he taught: worship of the one God. See who is Jesus in Islam and tawheed.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:72

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

Jesus himself called people to worship Allah as his Lord.

Quran, Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:59

Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.

A birth without a father does not make Jesus divine, just as Adam was not.

Quran 3:59, translation by Sahih International

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:171

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

The Quran rejects the Trinity and the idea that God has a son.

Quran, Surah Maryam 19:30

[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.

Jesus' first words describe him as Allah's servant.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3435

Sahih

"Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, that Jesus is the servant of Allah, His messenger, His word which He conveyed to Mary and a spirit from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, Allah will admit him to Paradise."

Muslim faith includes affirming Jesus as Allah's servant and messenger.
