What happened to Jesus according to Islam?

Short answer

Muslims believe Jesus was not killed or crucified. The Quran says it was only made to appear so, and that Allah raised him alive to Himself. So Muslims do not believe he died and rose on the third day. They believe he is alive with Allah, will return before the Last Day, will then die a natural death, and will be raised with all people on the Day of Resurrection.

Hanafi position

That Isa was not crucified but raised alive, and that he will descend again, is part of Sunni creed based on the Quran and mass-transmitted hadith. Denying his raising or his return goes against the agreed creed of Ahl al-Sunnah, in all four schools.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Quran answers the claim of those who said they had killed the Messiah: "they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but another was made to resemble him to them... Rather, Allah raised him to Himself." Elsewhere Allah tells Jesus: "I will take you and raise you to Myself." Most commentators explain "take you" as taking him whole, body and soul, or in a state like sleep, not as death.

Who was crucified in his place? The Quran does not say, and the commentators report different views: a disciple who volunteered, the one who betrayed him, or another man. Since no authentic text settles it, Muslims do not insist on a name. What matters is what the Quran states plainly: Jesus was saved and raised.

This shapes how Muslims see Easter. The Christian belief is that Jesus died for the sins of the world and rose on the third day. Muslims believe he did not die on the cross, and that no one dies for another's sins: each person repents directly to Allah. See original sin in Islam and can Muslims celebrate Easter?

Muslims do believe in resurrection, for everyone. Jesus says in the Quran: "peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive." Muslims understand this as his death after his return, and his rising with all people on the Day of Judgement. The Prophet ﷺ said the son of Mary will descend as a just judge, break the cross and kill the swine. See will Jesus return? and Prophet Isa.

The evidence

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:157

And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.

The Quran denies that Jesus was killed or crucified.

Quran, Surah An-Nisaa 4:158

Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.

Quran, Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:55

[Mention] when Allah said, "O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.

Allah promised to take Jesus up and purify him from those who disbelieved.

And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."
