Questions Other faiths and new Muslims

What should a new Muslim do with crosses and religious items from before Islam?

Short answer

Stop wearing or displaying crosses, statues, icons and other symbols of worship, since a Muslim's body and home should not carry the signs of another faith. Items that belong to family members can go back to them; your own can be disposed of quietly, never smashed or mocked in front of anyone. A Bible can be kept with respect, and family photos and keepsakes are fine.

Hanafi position

Wearing a cross or another religion's symbol is haram, and wearing it to show belonging to that religion is kufr in the Hanafi texts, which discuss the zunnar (belt worn as a religious sign) in this way. Statues and pictures of living beings kept on display are not allowed in the home. Religious items should not be insulted or destroyed in a way that hurts others.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not leave anything in his house bearing cross shapes without removing them. He also said angels do not enter a house with images. So a Muslim home has no crosses, statues, icons or pictures used in worship. This is not hostility to Christians; it is part of keeping a home for the worship of Allah alone.

  • Cross necklace: stop wearing it. Gold or silver can be melted down or reshaped into something else. If it is a family heirloom, some muftis allow returning it to the relative it came from rather than destroying it.
  • Statues, icons, nativity sets, rosaries: if they belong to family members, give them back. Your own should be disposed of quietly, not sold or passed to others for worship.
  • Paintings of Jesus or Mary: take them down, and return them to family if they want them.
  • Bible: you may keep it on a shelf with respect. See can Muslims read the Bible.
  • Photos and keepsakes: wedding photos taken in a church, baptism certificates and family albums can be kept as memories.

How you do it matters as much as what you do. Do not smash or burn things in front of your family, or throw them in the bin where they will find them. The Quran forbids insulting what others hold sacred. Quietly offering items back to the people who value them protects your family's feelings and shows them the gentleness of Islam. See telling your family.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-An'aam 6:108

And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.

Religious items are handled without insult.
