Can husband and wife shower together in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. There is no awrah between husband and wife, and the Prophet ﷺ and Aisha used to bathe from one container. Showering or bathing together, and seeing each other unclothed, is permitted. The four schools agree.

Hanafi position

Spouses may see and touch every part of each other's bodies. Bathing together is permitted. Some Hanafi scholars say it is better, as a matter of modesty, not to look at each other's private parts, but this is etiquette and not a prohibition.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Aisha said she and the Prophet ﷺ used to bathe together from one vessel. He also told a Companion to guard his awrah (the parts to be covered) from everyone except his wife. Allah describes spouses as clothing for each other (2:187), and the ayah on guarding the private parts makes an exception for one's spouse (23:6).

  • Ghusl after intimacy. A couple may do their ghusl together. Each must wash the whole body and rinse the mouth and nose. See how to do ghusl.
  • Looking. Seeing each other unclothed is permitted. A narration in which Aisha says they never saw each other's private parts is weak, so it does not create a rule, though some scholars still advise modesty in looking.
  • Dhikr in the bathroom. Avoid reciting Quran in the bathroom. See bismillah in the bathroom.
  • Water. Sharing a shower can save water, which is sunnah. See water for ghusl.

Children and others. The permission is between the two spouses only. Children should not see their parents unclothed, and they should be taught their own awrah as they grow.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:187

It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.

Spouses are the closest covering for each other.

Quran, Surah Al-Muminoon 23:5-7

And they who guard their private parts Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors -
