Short answer
Learn to read the Arabic correctly first, then memorise a small fixed amount every day, recite it to a teacher, and spend more time revising old portions than learning new ones. Use one printed mushaf so the page layout sticks, and recite what you learn in your salah. Allah says He has made the Quran easy to remember.
Memorising the whole Quran is fard kifayah (a communal duty) on the Muslims and a great virtue for the individual. Memorising al-Fatiha and at least one other surah is wajib on every Muslim for salah.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Allah says four times in Surah al-Qamar that He has made the Quran easy for remembrance (54:17). Children in every Muslim land memorise it, and many adults do too. A method that works for most people:
- Read correctly first. If you cannot yet read Arabic fluently, start with the Noorani Qaida and basic tajweed. Memorising mistakes is hard to undo.
- Fix a daily amount. A few lines, half a page or a page, at the same time each day. After Fajr works well for many.
- Repeat in small pieces. Read one ayah from the mushaf many times, then recite it without looking, then link it to the next ayah.
- Recite to a teacher. Someone who knows tajweed should hear you, so errors are caught early.
- Revise more than you learn. Keep three tracks: today's new lines, the last week or two, and older portions on a rotating schedule.
- Use it in salah. Reciting new surahs in your sunnah and night prayers fixes them.
The Prophet ﷺ warned that the Quran slips away faster than a tied camel, so keep checking on it. Begin with Juz Amma and the surahs you recite most, then move on. The hifz planner builds a daily plan from your pace, and the Quran tracker records your revision.
Sincerity matters most: memorise for Allah, not for a title. See memorising without a teacher and the reward of memorising.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Qamar 54:17

And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Kitab al-Salah, section on recitation. Memorising the amount needed for salah is fard on each person, al-Fatiha and a surah wajib, and the whole Quran fard kifayah.
