Questions Zakat and charity

Do you pay zakat on platinum or white gold?

Checked by our team

Short answer

White gold and rose gold, yes: they are gold alloys and zakatable like any gold. Platinum, palladium, diamonds and other gems, no, unless you bought them to sell. Zakat on metals applies only to gold and silver, and the four schools agree on this.

Hanafi position

Zakat on metals is fard only on gold and silver, which the Sharia treats as money in themselves. Platinum, palladium, titanium and gemstones owned for use or decoration carry no zakat; bought for resale, they are trade goods and zakatable at their market value.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Quran and hadith tie zakat on metals to gold and silver, which served as money in the Prophet's ﷺ time and still hold value as money. Other metals and stones are goods, like any other possession. They carry zakat only when they are trade goods.

  • White gold: gold mixed with metals such as palladium or nickel and often plated with rhodium. It is gold. Count it by its carat like any gold.
  • Rose gold: gold mixed with copper. It is gold.
  • Platinum and palladium jewellery: no zakat, however valuable.
  • Diamonds, rubies, pearls and other gems: no zakat when worn or kept.
  • Platinum bars, coins or gems bought to sell later at a profit: trade goods. Add their market value to your zakatable wealth each year (see zakat on business).

In a mixed piece, such as a gold ring set with a diamond, only the gold is zakatable. Weigh or estimate the gold without the stone (see zakat on jewellery you wear).

Because the ruling depends on why you bought the item, decide your intention honestly. Platinum jewellery bought to wear is not trade goods just because it might be sold one day. Use the zakat on gold calculator for your gold pieces.

The evidence

Quran, Surah At-Tawba 9:34

O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment.

The Quran names gold and silver as the metals that carry a due.
