Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."

Sulayman, seeing the throne of the Queen of Saba brought before him in a blink: this is from the favour of my Lord, to test whether I am grateful.

Guide

About these verses, and how to use them.

The Quran uses two words for blessing. Nimah is a favour or gift: health, food, family and, above all, faith. Barakah is increase and lasting good that Allah places in something: the Quran is called a blessed Book, and the rain blessed water. Allah says His favours cannot be counted, promises more to the grateful, and tells us to speak of His blessings. These verses cover both, each with its context.

Counting your blessings, the Sunnah way

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to look at those who have less than us, not more, so that we do not belittle Allah's favour on us (Sahih Muslim 2963). Gratitude, the scholars say, is in the heart by knowing the blessing is from Allah, on the tongue by saying Alhamdulillah, and in the limbs by using it in ways that please Him. Barakah is sought on the same path: taqwa (7:96), honest dealing, and beginning things with Bismillah. See also Quran verses about gratitude and the tasbih counter for your daily Alhamdulillah.
