1 Certainly will the believers have succeeded: 2 They who are during their prayer humbly submissive 3 And they who turn away from ill speech 4 And they who are observant of zakah 5 And they who guard their private parts 6 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - 7 But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors - 8 And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive 9 And they who carefully maintain their prayers - 10 Those are the inheritors 11 Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.

The successful believers described: humble in prayer, away from idle talk, paying zakat, chaste, keeping trusts and promises, guarding their prayers. They inherit al-Firdaws.

Qad aflaha man tazakkaa Wa zakaras ma Rabbihee fasallaa

14 He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself 15 And mentions the name of his Lord and prays.

Success is purifying yourself, remembering your Lord's name and praying.

Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa Wa qad khaaba man dassaahaa

9 He has succeeded who purifies it, 10 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

After a long run of oaths, the point: whoever purifies the soul succeeds, and whoever buries it in sin fails.

2 This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - 3 Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them, 4 And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]. 5 Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

The opening of Al-Baqarah: those who believe in the unseen, pray, give, and are certain of the Hereafter are the successful.

Waltakum minkum ummatuny yad'oona ilal khairi wa yaamuroona bilma 'roofi wa yanhawna 'anil munkar; wa ulaaa'ika humul muflihoon

And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.

A group that calls to good, enjoins right and forbids wrong: those are the successful.

And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.

After Jumuah, go out and seek Allah's bounty, and remember Him much so that you may succeed. Work and dhikr together.

Fattaqul laaha mastat'tum wasma'oo wa atee'oo waanfiqoo khairal li anfusikum; wa many-yooqa shuha nafsihee fa-ulaaa'ika humul muflihoon

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

Fear Allah as much as you can, and whoever is saved from their own stinginess is among the successful.

70 O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. 71 He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.

10 O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? 11 [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know. 12 He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment.

The trade that saves: faith, and striving with wealth and self. Its profit is forgiveness and the Garden, the great success.

Gardens and fine homes are promised to believing men and women, but Allah's pleasure is greater. That is the great success.

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

The real measure: whoever is kept from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has succeeded.

Qaala yaa qawmi ara'aitum in kuntu 'alaa baiyinatim mir Rabbee wa razaqanee minhu rizqan hasanaa; wa maaa ureedu an ukhaalifakum ilaa maaa anhaakum 'anh; in ureedu illal islaaha mastata't; wa maa tawfeeqeee illaa billaah; 'alaihi tawakkaltu wa ilaihi uneeb

He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him...? And I do not intend to differ from you in that which I have forbidden you; I only intend reform as much as I am able. And my success is not but through Allah. Upon him I have relied, and to Him I return.

Shuayb: my success is only through Allah; on Him I rely and to Him I turn.

Guide

About these verses, and how to use them

The Quran's word for success is falah, the same word the adhan calls to five times a day: hayya alal-falah, come to success. The Quran describes the successful (al-muflihun) by what they do: they are humble in prayer, avoid idle talk, pay zakat, keep their trusts and guard their prayers (23:1-11). Success is purifying the soul (91:9), and the great success (al-fawz al-azim) is Allah's pleasure and Paradise (9:72). Worldly effort is not left out: after Jumuah, go out and seek Allah's bounty and remember Him much so you may succeed (62:10). These are the main verses on success, each with its context.

Success in the Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "He has succeeded who became Muslim, was given enough provision, and whom Allah made content with what He gave him" (Sahih Muslim 1054). He also described real failure: the bankrupt of his ummah is the one who comes on the Day of Judgement with prayer, fasting and zakat, but had insulted, slandered and wronged people, so his good deeds are given to them (Sahih Muslim 2581). Success in the Quran is measured by both lives, so the same verses that praise prayer also send you out to work (62:10).
