Qul in kuntum tuhibboonal laaha fattabi' oonee yuhbibkumul laahu wa yaghfir lakum zunoobakum; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem

Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

The sign of loving Allah is following the Prophet ﷺ; then Allah will love you and forgive your sins. Al-Hasan al-Basri said people claimed to love Allah, so He tested them with this ayah.

Yaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo mai yartadda minkum 'an deenihee fasawfa yaatil laahu biqawminy yuhibbuhum wa yuhibboonahoo azillatin 'alal mu'mineena a'izzatin 'alal kaafireena yujaahidoona fee sabeelil laahi wa laa yakhaafoona lawmata laaa'im; zaalika fadlul laahi yu'teehi mai yashaaa'; wallaahu Waasi'un 'Aleem

O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

A people He loves and who love Him: humble with the believers, firm against enemies, striving in His cause and not afraid of anyone's blame.

Wa anfiqoo fee sabeelil laahi wa laa tulqoo bi aydeekum ilat tahlukati wa ahsinoo; innal laaha yuhibbul muhsineen

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

Spend in Allah's way and do good. Allah loves the muhsinin, those who do things with excellence.

Allazeena yunfiqoona fissarraaa'i waddarraaa'i wal kaazimeenal ghaiza wal aafeena 'anin-naas; wallaahu yuhibbul muhsineen

Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;

Spending in ease and in hardship, holding in anger, pardoning people: these are the muhsinin whom Allah loves.

Wa yas'aloonaka 'anil maheedi qul huwa azan fa'tazilun nisaaa'a fil maheedi wa laa taqraboo hunna hattaa yathurna fa-izaa tathharna faatoohunna min haisu amarakumul laah; innallaaha yuhibbut Tawwaabeena wa yuhibbul mutatahhireen

And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."

Part of the rules about menstruation. It ends: Allah loves those who keep turning to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves.

Laa taqum feehi abadaa; lamasjidun ussisa 'alat taqwaa min awwali yawmin ahaqqu an taqooma feeh; feehi rijaaluny yuhibbona ai yatatahharoo, wallaahu yuhibbul mmuttah hireen

Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

About the people of Masjid Quba, who loved to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

Balaa man awfaa bi'ahdihee wattaqaa fainnal laaha yuhibbul muttaqeen

But yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and fears Allah - then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.

Whoever keeps their promises and fears Allah: Allah loves the muttaqin.

Wa ka aiyim min Nabiyyin qaatala ma'ahoo ribbiyyoona kaseerun famaa wahanoo limaaa Asaabahum fee sabeelil laahi wa maa da'ufoo wa mas takaanoo; wallaahu yuhibbus saabireen

And how many a prophet [fought and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allah loves the steadfast.

Many prophets and their followers did not weaken or give in under hardship. Allah loves the steadfast.

Fabimaa rahmatim minal laahi linta lahum wa law kunta fazzan ghaleezal qalbi lanfaddoo min hawlika fafu 'anhum wastaghfir lahum wa shaawirhum fil amri fa izaa 'azamta fatawakkal 'alal laah; innallaaha yuhibbul mutawak kileen

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

Consult people, decide, then rely on Allah. Allah loves those who rely on Him.

Laa yanhaakumul laahu 'anil lazeena lam yuqaatilookum fid deeni wa lam yukhrijookum min diyaarikum an tabarroohum wa tuqsitooo ilaihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muqsiteen

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

Allah loves the just, and that includes kindness and fairness toward people of other faiths who have not fought the Muslims.

Innal laaha yuhibbul lazeena yuqaatiloona fee sabeelihee saffan kaannahum bunyaanum marsoos

Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.

Allah loves those who stand together in His cause in ranks, like a solid structure.

Wa Huwal Ghafoorul Wadood

And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,

Al-Wadud, the Loving, one of His names, set next to al-Ghafur, the Forgiving.

Wastaghfiroo Rabbakum summa toobooo ilaih; inna Rabbee Raheemunw Wadood

And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Affectionate."

About these verses, and how to use them

The Quran names the people Allah loves again and again: those who do good (al-muhsinin), those who keep repenting, those who purify themselves, the God-conscious, the patient, those who rely on Him and the just. It also gives one clear path to His love: follow the Prophet ﷺ (3:31). Allah's love is not a feeling we can measure, but its signs are guidance, forgiveness and acceptance. One of His names is al-Wadud, the Loving. These are the verses that say whom Allah loves, with their context.

What the Sunnah adds

In a hadith qudsi Allah says that His servant draws near to Him with nothing more beloved than the duties He has set, and keeps drawing near with voluntary deeds until He loves him; then He becomes the hearing with which he hears and the sight with which he sees (Sahih al-Bukhari 6502). The Prophet ﷺ said that when Allah loves a servant He calls Jibril and tells him to love that person, Jibril calls out to the people of heaven, and acceptance is then placed for him on earth (Sahih al-Bukhari 3209, Sahih Muslim 2637). That is how the scholars explain 19:96. The Quran also names whom Allah does not love: those who transgress (2:190), the wasteful (7:31), the arrogant (16:23), the treacherous (8:58) and those who spread corruption (28:77). See the 99 Names of Allah for al-Wadud, and Quran verses about love for love between people.
