Is clapping haram in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Clapping is not haram in itself. Many Hanafi muftis say clapping as entertainment or applause is makruh, because the Quran blames the idolaters' clapping and the sunnah way to show approval is saying Allahu akbar or SubhanAllah. Other scholars see applause as a neutral custom and allow it. Clapping with music, or as worship, is not allowed.

Hanafi position

Clapping for amusement or as a ritual is makruh, and with music or in dhikr it is forbidden. Clapping for a need, such as getting attention, keeping time for children or a woman alerting the imam in salah by tapping her hand, is permitted.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Quran says of the idolaters of Makkah that their prayer at the House was nothing but whistling and handclapping. Because of this verse, scholars dislike clapping when it is done as worship or as a form of play. The Hanafi jurists were especially firm against clapping and dancing during dhikr gatherings.

The sunnah also gave clapping a specific use. The Prophet ﷺ said that if something happens in the prayer, men say SubhanAllah and women clap, meaning they strike the back of one hand on the other to alert the imam. So clapping is not a forbidden sound in itself.

Applause is where scholars differ:

  • The cautious view, common in Hanafi fatwas: applause is makruh. It resembles the clapping the Quran blames, and Muslims have their own way to show joy and approval: saying Allahu akbar, SubhanAllah or MashaAllah.
  • The lenient view: applause today is just a custom of appreciation with no religious meaning, so it is permitted, especially at schools, graduations and sports events.

Situations that are clearly fine: clapping to call someone, to get a class's attention, to keep rhythm for toddlers learning songs without music, or as a doctor or coach's signal. Clapping that is part of music, a concert or a dance is not allowed because of what it is joined to. If you follow the cautious view, you can simply stay quiet or say takbir when others clap, without making a scene. See also is whistling haram.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Anfaal 8:35

And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved.

The Quran blames clapping as worship, which is why scholars dislike it as play.

Quran 8:35, translation by Sahih International

Sahih al-Bukhari 1203

Sahih

... التسبيح للرجال والتصفيق للنساء ...

"Saying SubhanAllah is for men, and clapping is for women."

In salah, women alert the imam by clapping, so clapping is not haram in itself.
