Is dancing haram in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

In the Hanafi school, dancing as entertainment is not permitted, and it is clearly haram with music, in mixed company or in a way that shows the body. A wife dancing for her husband in private is allowed. The Shafi'i school is more lenient and allows dancing that has no effeminate or seductive movement, so scholars do differ on this.

Hanafi position

Dancing for entertainment is not permitted, and it is haram when combined with music, mixing or immodest movement. Spouses dancing for each other in private is permitted. Some Hanafi muftis allow women to move to the duff among women at a wedding, with modest movement and no music.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Dancing is not haram in itself. It becomes haram when it has effeminate swaying or seductive movement, or is joined with music or mixing.

Explanation

Most dancing today comes with music, an audience of the opposite sex, tight clothing and movements meant to attract. Each of these is forbidden on its own, so dancing in clubs, at mixed parties, on TikTok for the public or at a prom is haram by the agreement of the scholars.

The question is dancing on its own. The Hanafi jurists counted dancing as a form of idle play (lahw) unworthy of a Muslim, and they strongly rejected those who made swaying and dancing part of dhikr. That is why the relied-upon Hanafi fatwa is that dancing as entertainment is not permitted.

Those who allow it point to a hadith in Sahih Muslim: on an Eid day, Abyssinians played and moved with their spears in the mosque while the Prophet ﷺ let Aisha watch. The Shafi'i school takes this as evidence that rhythmic movement is not haram in itself. The Hanafi scholars answered that it was a display of war skills with weapons, which is a form of training, not dancing for pleasure.

Common situations:

  • Husband and wife in private: permitted, and it can strengthen the marriage.
  • Women at a women-only wedding: some Hanafi muftis allow gentle movement to the duff with no music and no filming; others advise against it. Ask your local scholar.
  • Dance classes, ballet, Zumba with music: not permitted because of the music and the dancing itself. Choose other exercise.
  • Cultural dances at mixed events: not permitted.
  • Young children bouncing and playing: no sin on them.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Luqman 31:6

And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.

Idle entertainment that pulls people from Allah's way is blamed.

Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:31

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
