Short answer
A typical prom is haram to attend, because it is built around things Islam forbids: dates with the opposite sex, mixed dancing, music, immodest dress and often alcohol. Celebrating graduation itself is fine. Many Muslim students hold a halal alternative, such as a gender-separate dinner or a family celebration.
Attending a prom with dating, mixed dancing, music and immodest dress is haram. Celebrating finishing school in a way free of these is permitted.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Finishing school is a real achievement, and wanting to mark it with your friends is natural. The problem with prom is not celebration. It is what prom is made of:
- Taking a date: a boyfriend or girlfriend for the night, which Islam forbids. See is it haram to have a girlfriend.
- Slow dancing and dancing in mixed company: see is dancing haram.
- Music through the whole evening.
- Dress: outfits that show the body, and for women, removing hijab or wearing it with a revealing dress.
- After-parties with alcohol, drugs and being alone with the opposite sex.
Allah says do not even approach zina, and the Prophet ﷺ said that no man is alone with a woman except with a mahram present. He also said that the eyes commit zina by looking. Prom puts young people right at the door of all of this, which is why the scholars rule it out even if a person plans to 'just sit at the table'.
Ideas that keep the joy without the sin:
- a sisters-only or brothers-only formal dinner;
- a family celebration or trip;
- a Muslim student association graduation banquet with separate seating and no music;
- giving thanks to Allah with a dua, sadaqah or a gift to your parents, who got you here.
If your school treats prom as part of graduation, you can attend the graduation ceremony and skip the dance. Talk to your parents early, so you are not deciding on the night. The four schools agree on this ruling.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Israa 17:32
وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةًۭ وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًۭا ﴿٣٢﴾
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
Islam forbids the steps that lead to zina, not only the act.
Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:30
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
Mixed dancing and revealing dress go against lowering the gaze.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5233
Sahih... لا يخلون رجل بامرأة إلا مع ذي محرم ...
"No man should be alone with a woman except with a mahram present."
Dates and after-parties break this rule.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2152
Grading to be checked... فزنا العينين النظر ...
"The zina of the eyes is looking."
Sin starts with the gaze, which prom invites.
Where the ruling is recorded
- Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Kitab al-Hazr wa al-Ibaha, section on looking and touching. Looking at and being alone with non-mahrams is forbidden for fear of fitnah.
